THE BIG IDEA

The Ohio State University has various resources across campus that make it the great institution that it is today, ranging from its traditions and heritage to the diverse student body. However, below the surface of a united Buckeye community, there are undoubtedly instances of separation observed across campus due to its size and a plethora of specialized groups and diverse student body.

With Ohio State celebrating its 150th anniversary, the entire Columbus community is given the opportunity to reflect on the universal accomplishments, traditions, and challenges that the school and its students have, and continue to, experience. As a response to Ohio State’s journey and current environment, Neighborhood Design Center and Nonprofit Immersion Program will commission a student-generated public art installation to communicate the student experience of diversity and inclusion on campus. This includes, but is not limited to, the inclusion and representation of various ethnicities, cultures, religious affiliations, sexual orientations, abilities, etc.

The goal of the project is to facilitate a conversation amongst students, campus leaders, Ohio State University staff, and members of the Columbus area about Ohio State’s perception and and execution of inclusion.

Ultimately, the insights drawn from student lead discussions, a representative art selection panel, and the final works will all serve as a catalyst to a bigger conversation; that each and every voice has the right to be heard, frame the term “inclusion,” from their world view, and to open meaningful conversations with a broader group. The artwork should also add aesthetic value and provide a gathering space for current and prospective students, staff, and visitors to the beautiful campus area.

Refreshments and food will be provided and will focus on multicultural dishes from locally owned restaurants, alongside restaurants with missions that support inclusion in their workplace/community. In all, this is event will display our projects main goal; creating a safe space for inclusion, expression, and conversation.
